What is a Tanker Trailer?

A tanker trailer is a heavy-duty truck trailer whose tank is generally approved to carry the following items:

Chemicals

liquid

gas

Beverages (such as milk)

Dry/Bulk (eg grain, sand, cement, plastic pellets, etc.)

Tankers vary in size from small to large, depending on your shipping needs and product weight as measured by Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or vehicle weight when loaded.

The largest tanker has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) greater than 33,001 pounds or 14,969 kilograms. These are also known as tractor trailers and are considered Class 8 commercial vehicles that meet the guidelines of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), which establishes regulations for commercial vehicles.

One of the regulations is that any driver of a tanker with more than 1,000 gallons of liquids must have their commercial driver's license (CDL) endorsed. This involves taking a knowledge test to prove they can safely operate a tanker trailer.

What is GVWR and how does it affect tankers?

According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and its guidelines, heavy trucks and other vehicles must adhere to certain standards to optimize road safety. One such guideline is the GVWR, which sets the standard for the maximum weight a tanker trailer is designed to carry safely. GVWR is measured in pounds, so it is advisable to take special care when converting liquid weights in gallons or dry bulk material weights in cubic feet.
